introducing raygun

Our submitter writes: “Thought you might enjoy the following video, involving a bunch of preposterously self-regarding wankers called Raygun. A mate sent me the link and I immediately thought of your website. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a band dress up quite such a paucity of ideas (both musical and intellectual) with such a ridiculous veneer of self-indulgent, over-the-top nonsense.

“Highlights include the singer complaining about the Jobcentre not being able to get him into the music industry, comparing their turgid pop-rock schlock to Berlin-era Bowie and James Brown, and wondering aloud what God thinks of him. Originally I thought they were a landfill indie version of The Darkness, but it appears they’re entirely without irony, which is pretty much the most terrifying thing I could imagine. Unsurprisingly, they’re already signed to Sony BMG.”

Humanity disgusts me.

  1. I’d heard that this might be some kind of satire, but they have a profile on the Sony BMG website, a feature in the Guardian, and two singles available to purchase on iTunes. So if it is a spoof, someone’s worked very hard on it.

  4. Gosh guys leave them alone they are you know like channeling so much darkness and complexity. And you know. Just that all important dash of casual punk rock attitude.

  5. this band played in my work and were speaking to me and my mate after it. the singer genuinely compared himself to Iggy Pop, David Bowie and numerous other legends. They played to about 15 or 20 people that night. they are definitely real.

  6. Apparently Sony BMG have taken LEGAL ACTION to have this video removed from YouTube! THE MAN cannot take it!

  7. yep, they’ve deleted the video, and suspended the account which originally posted it (which belongs, i believe, to a music critic from the Independent).

You can still watch a video of the original broadcast here:

you’ll have to skip through the footage of them actually playing though…

  9. Blimey, this band reminds me of a band that we booked last minute on a show as a favour after they were cancelled elsewhere. Listened to the first song on their Myspace which was ok but we were very unprepared for the ridiculously bad “Playground Legend”. Check them out, they are well worth a laugh. Plus at us for putting them on, aaaargh.

  10. Wow. I’ve seen this – It kinda reminded me of that promo ‘tour diary’ video for The Coolness. Actually, that might deserve it’s own post. It’s amazing/awful.
